Visa Process

☁️ To study abroad in Korea as an exchange student, a D-2-6 student visa is required. MIX has a link of visa guides here

✈️ Since the student visa is valid for 5 months, it's important to choose when to apply for a visa based on your departure date. Note: the visa takes 3 weeks to process.

📝 To obtain a visa, students must go to the Consulate General of The Republic of Korea in Honolulu (on the Pali Highway). Since the consulate accepts walk-ins, there is no appointment required!

Tip: The visa application requires proof of funding. If you intend to use the Freeman scholarship as evidence, you must acquire it in a sealed/signed envelope.

Visa application materials:

  • Completed application form

This visa application can be found here.

  • Valid passport (1 photocopy)

The consulate will hold onto your passport until you get your visa, so remember to have digital             copies.

  • Passport size photo

Photo must be 2 in. x 2 in.

  • State issued ID (1 photocopy)

If you do not have an ID, the consulate will use your passport as identification.

  • Business Registration Certificate (or Registration Number Certificate) of partner university

This will be sent by your partner university.

  • Proof of funding

You may use your bank statements and/or Freeman award letter. The balance must be greater           than the expected amount listed in the business registration certificate. For Yonsei, it was $4000         (as of Fall 2022).

  • Proof of enrollment from your home university

Your official transcript in a sealed/signed envelope can be used for proof of enrollment.

  • Study plan

This is a short write up of your plans in Korea. I discussed my background, why I chose to study            in Korea, and my academic goals. Although I wrote ~300 words, there is no exact minimum or              maximum length. Remember to sign your name and date at the bottom!

  • $45 fee for visa application

       Cash or money order only

  • Birth Certificate (if you’re of Korean descent)

If you're Korean, remember to verify your citizenship status with the Korean Embassy. If you are             classified as a Korean citizen, you are not eligible for a D-2 Student Visa and must go through a           different route.
